A Note From Ms. Sharon, Art Teacher

All our Innocademy art classes are planning to participate in Art Prize next fall by creating a collaborative mural. There has been a new category created for nonprofits and school groups that we can access.  I will need some MAGAZINES because we will be doing a paper collage with the same technique we used a few years ago.  You can see our earlier entry behind Heidi’s desk and you will see that we need many torn up magazines to do this. Heidi will have a box by her desk so that you can donate magazines.  Our theme will be Michigan animals.  I can also use any volunteers that might want to help at any time on Monday and Tuesdays.  We can only do this if we have a few parents to help our students apply the torn papers.  You don’t need any special talent, the drawing will be already on the canvas, you just have to help students fill in the proper colors. I am looking forward to starting after winter break. Please contact Ms. Sharon at sharon.brandner@innocademy.com if you can help out.

Do You Volunteer?

Thank YOU! If you have been wanting to volunteer, we would LOVE it! If you have not yet filled out a volunteer background check form, please use the form, innocademy_volunteer_background_form2 to do so. This is for ANY adult who helps out on campus – no matter if you are a regular volunteer or just a one timer. We appreciate all of our families – – and extended families/friends who help support our students and staff!

Part Time Help Wanted!

Do you have a teenager looking for a part time job working with kids?  If so, we have a position available that could be a great fit.  We are looking for an Afterschool Enrichment Helper.  This person would assist the Afterschool Enrichment Coordinator in implementing the lesson plans for that day, supervising kids, helping with snack time, and cleaning up at the end of the day.  Hours are 3:30 – 5:30 pm for 2-3 days per week.  Must be 15 to apply.  If you are interested, please email sara.vereeke@innocademy.com

What IS The Health Advisory Board, Anyway?

Our Health Advisory Board is designed to create a comprehensive scope and sequence for health and wellness for students K-12. The primary focus is on reproductive health. Once resources have been vetted and the scope and sequence for each grade level is designed, it will be presented to our school boards at Innocademy and iCademy for approval. After approval, the curriculum will be implemented by teachers at the appropriate and recommended grade levels.

Two years ago our boards all voted to proceed with an “abstinence based” curriculum. Currently, the only curriculum approved by the boards and taught each year is one HIV/AIDS lesson that is required by the State of Michigan for students in 5th-12th grades.

WINTER GEAR AND SLIPPERS!!

Thanks to all of our families for sending winter gear with students every day. Students will always go outside for recess if the temperature and/or windchill are 10 degrees or above. Looking forward to some winter fun! Also a reminder that slippers are encouraged at school. Many students (and teachers! =) keep a pair in their cubby so they can change from their wet boots into something cozy and warm for learning time.

Job Opportunity!

Innocademy-Homestead Campus has a great “hot lunch” opportunity for someone who wants to work around their student’s schedule.  This position is Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-2:30pm.  Innocademy Homestead food service is under the Holland Christian food service Child Nutrition Program and compensation would be through Holland Christian.  You would co-work with another team member preparing and serving hot lunch. Please contact Nancy at nmccarthy@hollandchristian.org if you are interested.

 Parent’s Night Out –  January 12th!

Do you need some time to yourself?
What movie do you want to go see at the movie theater? Where do you want to eat?
What errands do you have to run that would be so much easier if it was only you?
Las huellas’ team is here to help!  Drop your kids off with us in our las huellas space (in the space behind Precademy) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on our scheduled night and enjoy the evening!  All we ask is for a small fee of $10(cash or check made out to Innocademy) per child.  We will provide popcorn and a movie or even some craft for them to enjoy.

Children must be completely potty trained and preschool age (3). We ask that kiddos eat dinner prior to arriving and that they not bring extra toys or snacks, unless there is an allergy involved.
Our team would put the money we collect from these parent night out events into our Professional Development Account that will help us go to Minnesota and learn from Spanish Immersion experts at the University of Minnesota next school year.  This is a very expensive conference for teachers but we feel it is well worth it to be the best we can be for your kids. Thank you in advance for your help in achieving our team goal!
Please use the sign up genius below to sign your kids up and so we plan popcorn needed accordingly. We have set dates for the entire year. Make sure to sign up for the correct date.
**If we do not have at least 5 kiddos we will need to cancel that date night, so please tell your friends! 😊 We will let you know NO LATER than the Monday prior to the date night.

Thanks, Representative Garcia!

State Representative Daniela Garcia recently shared an article from her newsletter featuring our Innocademy Students who presented at the tech conference on December 6th. Take a peek at what she had to say…

Innocademy Students Visit the Capitol

On December 6, 2017 the Michigan Association of Computer Users in Learning (MACUL) held their 17th annual Technology Showcase at the Michigan Capitol for students to demonstrate the projects they have been working on that utilize technology. Students from thirty schools throughout Michigan displayed their classroom projects, showing legislators the innovative ways in which technology is being used to facilitate classroom learning.

I was happy to welcome students from Innocademy in Zeeland to the Capitol as they showed me some of the different technology utilized at their school. Innocademy students compared two systems they have used in classrooms:  Office 365 on Windows laptops and Google Classroom on Chromebooks. Additionally, they demonstrated their hardware repairing skills and what it’s like to work with virtual coursework as part of a dual enrollment opportunity with their sister school, iCademy Global.

Having sat and listened to these students, I was very impressed with their knowledge of the technology they had. Innocademy is one of the many schools in our district that are using this technology to better serve our students. I am grateful to schools, like Innocademy, that are teaching these students with the latest technology and pushing them beyond the normal standard of schoolwork because it is critical to the future prosperity of our state.

Nominate Your Favorite Precademy/Inno/iG Teacher!

The Holland Sentinel is working to discover and highlight some of the BEST teachers in the area! We are so lucky to have LOTS of them in our organization! You can use the link HERE, to nominate your favorite teacher each month. If selected, he/she will be featured in the Holland Sentinel as well as be invited to an end of the year celebration with other amazing teachers from the area.

NEW Information For This Week

Angel Tree & HDVCH- Are You Able To Help?

As Innocademy and iCademy Families we are able to give to the families in our community who have recently experienced loss. Thank you for embodying the Spirit of Christmas by investing in the lives of the people around us. We are so grateful for YOU and this community with all of its support! Even the smallest contribution can be a significant blessing! If every family was able to contribute just one thing, that would be amazing!
We are also excited to be partnering with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital this Holiday Season! A section of HDVCH is specifically focused on the care and “distraction” of their young patients through items and activities that interest patients as they stay at the hospital.
This sign up has many items that HDVCH is looking for, but we are not limited to the items on this list. Anything that would be a fit for kids 17 and under to distract them from treatment, being in a hospital during the holidays or simply could bring a smile to their face will be collected.
If you are able to contribute either items for the Angel Tree Project, donations to HDVCH or both, please bring the UNWRAPPED items to Homestead Campus no later than Monday, December 18th. Please take a peek – there are things on the list for as little as $5.
Click on the link, below, for requested items for Angel Tree and HDVCH.

Medication Reminder

For the safety of our students, ALL medications need a note from a doctor.  All medications are to be administered by Heidi or Jane and students should not be administering meds to themselves. This includes over the counter medications as well.

Marketplace, Wreath Sale and Scrip update

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported our entrepreneurial students the past couple of months.  Over $5,500 was earned by nearly 90 students at Marketplace – your generosity is so very much appreciated!  Our wreath sale fundraiser was another huge success earning just under $2,000 for the 45+ students who participated.  Our Scrip shopping families also earned another $2,500 for their 35 kiddos over the last 3 months.  That’s right folks $10,000 has been earned by 125 students and their families thanks to your support, encouragement and generosity!!!  What an incredible gift you have given our students this holiday season!

If your student participated in any of these fundraising opportunities be on the lookout for a Field Experience Account balance update coming home this week with specific information relating to his/her earnings for the fundraiser and a current balance.

Parent Entry Badges Available

If you are interested in purchasing a badge that will allow you to access the front door during school hours, please see Heidi at the front desk. She has badges available for $5. You will also be required to fill out a background check if we don’t currently have one on file for you.

School Car Decals – Limited Quantity

We do have a limited quantity of Precademy, Innocademy, iCademy and Las Huellas Car Decals available at the front desk. Get them while they last! Decals are $4 each.

Christmas Ideas!

If you are looking for a gift for your kiddo, some of our electives teachers shared some ideas, below, of items the kids were having a BALL with during their classes:

IDEAS FROM CODING CLASS:
1. Ozobot –

Easy to program Ozobot by simply drawing lines and color segments. Then advance to the visual block-based editor OzoBlockly, with its many features and modes, taking you from Novice to Master in no time at all!

2. Dot & Dash –

Dash and Dot are robots that can sense, act and think! Use block coding on four different free iPad apps to control their robots. The durable and kid-friendly robots are a safe and easy way to encourage critical thinking and fun!
3. Bloxels – Bloxels is an innovative video game development platform that allows you to create your own video games. With easy-to-use physical and digital tools, the imaginative gaming worlds of young gamer’s come to life in a cool retro arcade style.
IDEAS FROM INNOGINEERING CLASS:
  1. K’nex: most kids prefer making smaller designs of their own with inspiration from a challenge or a picture rather than the super complex roller coasters.  Recommend checking out ebay for great deals.  There is a goodwill in Oregon that constantly has 15 pound boxes of K’nex for sale starting at 25 bucks and usually go for 40 dollars or so.  That is the equivalent of many many sets for a fraction of the cost.  I cannot stress enough that sorting the pieces and keeping the kits organized helps kids easily see what parts to use. (1st+)
  2. Kid K’nex are also available with easier parts for younger kids (Preschool-2nd)
  3. Vex/Hexbugs creates several robotic kits that kids can build (ages vary)
  4. Marble run games (The commercial kits are usually geared to K-3)
  5. Gears, Gears, Gears are a big hit with kids, though we have not used them this year yet in Innogineering (These kits are usually geared for k-3)
  6. Other sets like snap circuits and little bits electronics (3rd+)
  7. Lego kits are great but I would encourage buying bulk parts more than pop culture themed kits.  Off brand pieces often are just as great as lego brand pieces for a fraction of the cost. (K+)
  8. Tinker Toys are making a cool comeback and are similar to K’nex for creative building. (K+)
  9. Robotic arms are very popular in class and can be bought as kits to put together as a family for 30-80 dollars (2nd+)
  10. Matchbox car tracks (K+)
  11. Any kit that teachergeek.com sells look pretty cool and are reasonably priced but they are more educational and not really meant to be toys (2nd+)
  12. Makedo or Mr. McGroovy construction kits are awesome and can help kids turn their Christmas present boxes into things better than the present itself. They are reasonably priced, but a cheaper alternative would be drywall anchors.  We have not done this yet, but will be second semester. (2nd+)
  13. Any RC car or drone where kids are actually putting it together and can make changes. (3rd+)
  14. Creating a cool makers toolkit would be great for kids.  Items like rubber bands, tape, straws, dowels, string, nuts and bolts, popsicle sticks, cardboard squares with something that can punch a hole in it for the nuts and bolts, Pipe Cleaners, coffee stirrers, etc.  (For older students it would be great to add cordless drills and foam cutters) (K+ based on what parents buy)
  15. Plastimake (I Just learned about this stuff!  Looks cool.)  Also sold as ThermoMorph and other moldable plastic. (2nd+)

More Christmas…

We feel incredibly fortunate to work in a community where our parents are so supportive! We know that, sweetly, many of you often like to do something for us at Christmas. This year, we not only hosting an Angel Tree for families in need, but also collecting items for “poke prizes” and “distraction boxes” provided to patients at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. We would love for you to donate to one of these opportunities instead of feeling like you need to do something for us. If, however, you feel as though you still would like to do something additional, Amazon Giftcards are always great as they allow us to purchase fun games and materials for the classroom. Thank you so much!

Fair Trade Market Happening This Week – Join us for some Globally Conscious Shopping!

Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 2.11.31 PM

Innocademy middle school robotics represented themselves very well in a tournament at Allendale Middle School.  Our top team finished the afternoon in 11th place out of nearly 40 teams.  Our other two teams also did very well ending up in 25th and 27th place.  This is a tremendous accomplishment, especially considering all of our students, coach, and teams had no experience at this level! The kids handled the stress of competition extremely well and positively praised their teammates and others throughout the tournament.  Our youngest team, and the youngest team in the nation (Las Huellas 5th grade) even wowed the judges in their presentation by expressing what they learned in both English and Spanish.  The teams learned a ton this year and are excited to use that experience to do even more next year.  We also picked up a local sponsor in Woodward, and two new mentors for next year’s team.  If you are interested in volunteering to help make our teams even better next season, please contact chad.zuber@innocademy.com

Please do not worry, as this will all be anonymous.

Should you have some specific needs this year – – or know of a family that does, please send an email request BY MONDAY, DECEMBER 4TH, to deedee.defrell@icademyglobal.org

All requests will be viewed by Ms Deedee. Once all requests have been received, you will hear back directly from her regarding your need(s) with specific details.

Please, for everyone’s safety, KEEP LEFT and use the entrance for entering and the exit for exiting – – no matter what day or time you are using the parking area. Thank you.

Parent’s Night Out –  December 15th!
