Summer Technology Camp Opportunity for Girls

Camp Infinity is a week-long summer technology camp for girls entering 5th to 8th grade that introduces technology as fun and fulfilling and inspires the pursuit of technology education. MCWT Foundation created it to address the primary reasons girls lose interest in technology: confidence, social relevance, and social (peer) acceptance.

The camp:

  • Builds confidence and capability with hands-on technology activities such as robotics and computer game design
  • Demonstrates that technology is fun through the execution of engaging projects with other girls, with high school girls as counselors
  • Reinforces social relevance by featuring visitors from the local technology community that explain how their work is important to society at large

Founded in 2004, Camp Infinity helps spark girls’ interest in math and science, which tends to decrease during middle-school years. It separates the girls into two groups of 20 by grade to better cater to their technological experience. The fourth and fifth grade girls focus on website, app and video game design while the sixth and seventh graders focus on robotics and web and app design.

During lunch, professionals from leading area companies meet with the girls and encourage them to continue learning about technology. Access to role models like these reinforces the rewards and opportunities a career in technology can bring.

Date: Holland – July 16th thru July 19th

  • Lunch will be provided each day.
  • Morning and afternoon snacks will be provided each day.
  • All camp supplies will be provided.
  • Camp Infinity times are from 8:30am-3:30pm Monday – Thursday
  • Cost: $75/camper. Limited scholarships are available to reduce the cost to $25/camper.

NEW Information For This Week

Coin Wars Begin, Today!

The oldest friends are headed to Mexico in a few short months!  We will be working with a children’s home while we are there.  They need help with some home repairs and all of the 15 children living there are in desperate need of a good pair of shoes.  We are hoping to raise a $1000 to purchase painting/repair supplies needed to work in the home and also take the children to purchase shoes.

Today starts our annual Coin War fundraiser.  This year the student travelers thought it would be fun to have the following rules for our coin war:

  • All pennies and rolled coins count for positive.
  • Silver unrolled coins and bills count negative.

There will be two winners for the Coin Wars this year – one from the youngest-middle friends group and one for the older and oldest friends.  The winning classes will get to help choose the themes for spirit week.

You can see more details, below:

Thanks for supporting us as we travel!

JRL Help Needed, Please!

After Spring Break one of the current JRL volunteers won’t be available any longer.

Whoever is interested in helping needs to be able to be at school between 9.00am and 11.00am every week on that specific day (not to be available every once in a while is not a problem though).
Please contact Ms. Claudia at rieder.claudia@t-online.de with any questions you may have.

We are excited to say that we will be hosting a robotics tournament for ALL of our 4th graders at Innocademy on March 10.  Watch for upcoming details about times, but this event will take much of the day.  We hope to everyone there.

In preparation for the event, we have been working hard in class to master many missions set up by FIRST robotics.  We would like to offer optional additional practices on Wednesday and Thursday in the month of February from 3:30-4:30 for students interested in getting extra practice programing their robots.  These extra practices will take place in Zipper labs and are for students interested in improving their programing skills.

If these practices go well we will host additional optional practices over break week in February.

A Note From Ms. Sharon, Art Teacher

All our Innocademy art classes are planning to participate in Art Prize next fall by creating a collaborative mural. There has been a new category created for nonprofits and school groups that we can access.  I will need some MAGAZINES because we will be doing a paper collage with the same technique we used a few years ago.  You can see our earlier entry behind Heidi’s desk and you will see that we need many torn up magazines to do this. Heidi will have a box by her desk so that you can donate magazines.  Our theme will be Michigan animals.  I can also use any volunteers that might want to help at any time on Monday and Tuesdays.  We can only do this if we have a few parents to help our students apply the torn papers.  You don’t need any special talent, the drawing will be already on the canvas, you just have to help students fill in the proper colors. I am looking forward to starting after winter break. Please contact Ms. Sharon at sharon.brandner@innocademy.com if you can help out.

Do You Volunteer?

Thank YOU! If you have been wanting to volunteer, we would LOVE it! If you have not yet filled out a volunteer background check form, please use the form, innocademy_volunteer_background_form2 to do so. This is for ANY adult who helps out on campus – no matter if you are a regular volunteer or just a one timer. We appreciate all of our families – – and extended families/friends who help support our students and staff!

Part Time Help Wanted!

Do you have a teenager looking for a part time job working with kids?  If so, we have a position available that could be a great fit.  We are looking for an Afterschool Enrichment Helper.  This person would assist the Afterschool Enrichment Coordinator in implementing the lesson plans for that day, supervising kids, helping with snack time, and cleaning up at the end of the day.  Hours are 3:30 – 5:30 pm for 2-3 days per week.  Must be 15 to apply.  If you are interested, please email sara.vereeke@innocademy.com

Join The Innocademy/iCademyHealth Advisory Board!

he Innocademy/iCademy Global Health Advisory Board is planning on having the first meeting of the year on Monday January 29th from 4:30-5:30. If you are interested in attending and/or joining the board, please send an email to katie.wilson@innocademy.com with your name!

We will plan on meeting in the circle room on top of the stairs. If you have any questions feel free to send them my way! Thanks and hope to see you there!

Katie Wilson

What IS The Health Advisory Board, Anyway?

Our Health Advisory Board is designed to create a comprehensive scope and sequence for health and wellness for students K-12. The primary focus is on reproductive health. Once resources have been vetted and the scope and sequence for each grade level is designed, it will be presented to our school boards at Innocademy and iCademy for approval. After approval, the curriculum will be implemented by teachers at the appropriate and recommended grade levels.

Two years ago our boards all voted to proceed with an “abstinence based” curriculum. Currently, the only curriculum approved by the boards and taught each year is one HIV/AIDS lesson that is required by the State of Michigan for students in 5th-12th grades.

Total Trek Quest – Registration OPEN!

TTQ Registration is going ONLINE! Parents, starting January 2 you can register for the Total Trek Quest program ONLINE by clicking the link, HERE. This new partnership will allow us to respond faster to your registration questions, will reduce the time it takes to have your son listed on the roster and will give prompt updates on wait lists. We do our very best to keep registration costs low, but in order to accommodate this change and to ensure we are still able to give out scholarships to all who need it, we will be raising the Total Trek Quest Registration fee to $45. You can still stop in to our offices to register your son, as we are working on ensuring kiosk style access to RacePlanner. Look for our info sheets to come home-and if you have any questions, please email Brandon at bmelnyk@arborcircle.org

Job Opportunity!

Innocademy-Homestead Campus has a great “hot lunch” opportunity for someone who wants to work around their student’s schedule.  This position is Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-2:30pm.  Innocademy Homestead food service is under the Holland Christian food service Child Nutrition Program and compensation would be through Holland Christian.  You would co-work with another team member preparing and serving hot lunch. Please contact Nancy at nmccarthy@hollandchristian.org if you are interested.

WINTER GEAR AND SLIPPERS!!

Thanks to all of our families for sending winter gear with students every day. Students will always go outside for recess if the temperature and/or windchill are 10 degrees or above. Looking forward to some winter fun! Also a reminder that slippers are encouraged at school. Many students (and teachers! =) keep a pair in their cubby so they can change from their wet boots into something cozy and warm for learning time.
