NEW Information For This Week

Angel Tree & HDVCH- Are You Able To Help?

As Innocademy and iCademy Families we are able to give to the families in our community who have recently experienced loss. Thank you for embodying the Spirit of Christmas by investing in the lives of the people around us. We are so grateful for YOU and this community with all of its support! Even the smallest contribution can be a significant blessing! If every family was able to contribute just one thing, that would be amazing!
We are also excited to be partnering with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital this Holiday Season! A section of HDVCH is specifically focused on the care and “distraction” of their young patients through items and activities that interest patients as they stay at the hospital.
This sign up has many items that HDVCH is looking for, but we are not limited to the items on this list. Anything that would be a fit for kids 17 and under to distract them from treatment, being in a hospital during the holidays or simply could bring a smile to their face will be collected.
If you are able to contribute either items for the Angel Tree Project, donations to HDVCH or both, please bring the UNWRAPPED items to Homestead Campus no later than Monday, December 18th. Please take a peek – there are things on the list for as little as $5.
Click on the link, below, for requested items for Angel Tree and HDVCH.

Medication Reminder

For the safety of our students, ALL medications need a note from a doctor.  All medications are to be administered by Heidi or Jane and students should not be administering meds to themselves. This includes over the counter medications as well.

Marketplace, Wreath Sale and Scrip update

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has supported our entrepreneurial students the past couple of months.  Over $5,500 was earned by nearly 90 students at Marketplace – your generosity is so very much appreciated!  Our wreath sale fundraiser was another huge success earning just under $2,000 for the 45+ students who participated.  Our Scrip shopping families also earned another $2,500 for their 35 kiddos over the last 3 months.  That’s right folks $10,000 has been earned by 125 students and their families thanks to your support, encouragement and generosity!!!  What an incredible gift you have given our students this holiday season!

If your student participated in any of these fundraising opportunities be on the lookout for a Field Experience Account balance update coming home this week with specific information relating to his/her earnings for the fundraiser and a current balance.

Parent Entry Badges Available

If you are interested in purchasing a badge that will allow you to access the front door during school hours, please see Heidi at the front desk. She has badges available for $5. You will also be required to fill out a background check if we don’t currently have one on file for you.

School Car Decals – Limited Quantity

We do have a limited quantity of Precademy, Innocademy, iCademy and Las Huellas Car Decals available at the front desk. Get them while they last! Decals are $4 each.

Job Opportunity!

Innocademy-Homestead Campus has a great “hot lunch” opportunity for someone who wants to work around their student’s schedule.  This position is Tuesday through Friday from 10:00-2:30pm.  Innocademy Homestead food service is under the Holland Christian food service Child Nutrition Program and compensation would be through Holland Christian.  You would co-work with another team member preparing and serving hot lunch. Please contact Nancy at nmccarthy@hollandchristian.org if you are interested.

WINTER GEAR AND SLIPPERS!!

Thanks to all of our families for sending winter gear with students every day. Students will always go outside for recess if the temperature and/or windchill are 10 degrees or above. Looking forward to some winter fun! Also a reminder that slippers are encouraged at school. Many students (and teachers! =) keep a pair in their cubby so they can change from their wet boots into something cozy and warm for learning time.

A Note From Ms. Sharon, Art Teacher

All our Innocademy art classes are planning to participate in Art Prize next fall by creating a collaborative mural. There has been a new category created for nonprofits and school groups that we can access.  I will need some MAGAZINES because we will be doing a paper collage with the same technique we used a few years ago.  You can see our earlier entry behind Heidi’s desk and you will see that we need many torn up magazines to do this. Heidi will have a box by her desk so that you can donate magazines.  Our theme will be Michigan animals.  I can also use any volunteers that might want to help at any time on Monday and Tuesdays.  We can only do this if we have a few parents to help our students apply the torn papers.  You don’t need any special talent, the drawing will be already on the canvas, you just have to help students fill in the proper colors. I am looking forward to starting after winter break. Please contact Ms. Sharon at sharon.brandner@innocademy.com if you can help out.

Part Time Help Wanted!

Do you have a teenager looking for a part time job working with kids?  If so, we have a position available that could be a great fit.  We are looking for an Afterschool Enrichment Helper.  This person would assist the Afterschool Enrichment Coordinator in implementing the lesson plans for that day, supervising kids, helping with snack time, and cleaning up at the end of the day.  Hours are 3:30 – 5:30 pm for 2-3 days per week.  Must be 15 to apply.  If you are interested, please email sara.vereeke@innocademy.com

Christmas Ideas!

If you are looking for a gift for your kiddo, some of our electives teachers shared some ideas, below, of items the kids were having a BALL with during their classes:

IDEAS FROM CODING CLASS:
1. Ozobot –

Easy to program Ozobot by simply drawing lines and color segments. Then advance to the visual block-based editor OzoBlockly, with its many features and modes, taking you from Novice to Master in no time at all!

2. Dot & Dash –

Dash and Dot are robots that can sense, act and think! Use block coding on four different free iPad apps to control their robots. The durable and kid-friendly robots are a safe and easy way to encourage critical thinking and fun!
3. Bloxels – Bloxels is an innovative video game development platform that allows you to create your own video games. With easy-to-use physical and digital tools, the imaginative gaming worlds of young gamer’s come to life in a cool retro arcade style.
IDEAS FROM INNOGINEERING CLASS:
  1. K’nex: most kids prefer making smaller designs of their own with inspiration from a challenge or a picture rather than the super complex roller coasters.  Recommend checking out ebay for great deals.  There is a goodwill in Oregon that constantly has 15 pound boxes of K’nex for sale starting at 25 bucks and usually go for 40 dollars or so.  That is the equivalent of many many sets for a fraction of the cost.  I cannot stress enough that sorting the pieces and keeping the kits organized helps kids easily see what parts to use. (1st+)
  2. Kid K’nex are also available with easier parts for younger kids (Preschool-2nd)
  3. Vex/Hexbugs creates several robotic kits that kids can build (ages vary)
  4. Marble run games (The commercial kits are usually geared to K-3)
  5. Gears, Gears, Gears are a big hit with kids, though we have not used them this year yet in Innogineering (These kits are usually geared for k-3)
  6. Other sets like snap circuits and little bits electronics (3rd+)
  7. Lego kits are great but I would encourage buying bulk parts more than pop culture themed kits.  Off brand pieces often are just as great as lego brand pieces for a fraction of the cost. (K+)
  8. Tinker Toys are making a cool comeback and are similar to K’nex for creative building. (K+)
  9. Robotic arms are very popular in class and can be bought as kits to put together as a family for 30-80 dollars (2nd+)
  10. Matchbox car tracks (K+)
  11. Any kit that teachergeek.com sells look pretty cool and are reasonably priced but they are more educational and not really meant to be toys (2nd+)
  12. Makedo or Mr. McGroovy construction kits are awesome and can help kids turn their Christmas present boxes into things better than the present itself. They are reasonably priced, but a cheaper alternative would be drywall anchors.  We have not done this yet, but will be second semester. (2nd+)
  13. Any RC car or drone where kids are actually putting it together and can make changes. (3rd+)
  14. Creating a cool makers toolkit would be great for kids.  Items like rubber bands, tape, straws, dowels, string, nuts and bolts, popsicle sticks, cardboard squares with something that can punch a hole in it for the nuts and bolts, Pipe Cleaners, coffee stirrers, etc.  (For older students it would be great to add cordless drills and foam cutters) (K+ based on what parents buy)
  15. Plastimake (I Just learned about this stuff!  Looks cool.)  Also sold as ThermoMorph and other moldable plastic. (2nd+)

More Christmas…

We feel incredibly fortunate to work in a community where our parents are so supportive! We know that, sweetly, many of you often like to do something for us at Christmas. This year, we not only hosting an Angel Tree for families in need, but also collecting items for “poke prizes” and “distraction boxes” provided to patients at Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. We would love for you to donate to one of these opportunities instead of feeling like you need to do something for us. If, however, you feel as though you still would like to do something additional, Amazon Giftcards are always great as they allow us to purchase fun games and materials for the classroom. Thank you so much!

Unfortunately, there have been many folks trying to exit through the entrance area of the parking lot. This is extremely dangerous! Please, for everyone’s safety, KEEP LEFT and use the entrance for entering and the exit for exiting – – no matter what day or time you are using the parking area. Thank you.

Parent’s Night Out –  December 15th!

Do you need some time to yourself?
What movie do you want to go see at the movie theater? Where do you want to eat?
What errands do you have to run that would be so much easier if it was only you?
Las huellas’ team is here to help!  Drop your kids off with us in our las huellas space (in the space behind Precademy) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on our scheduled night and enjoy the evening!  All we ask is for a small fee of $10(cash or check made out to Innocademy) per child.  We will provide popcorn and a movie or even some craft for them to enjoy.

Children must be completely potty trained and preschool age (3). We ask that kiddos eat dinner prior to arriving and that they not bring extra toys or snacks, unless there is an allergy involved.
Our team would put the money we collect from these parent night out events into our Professional Development Account that will help us go to Minnesota and learn from Spanish Immersion experts at the University of Minnesota next school year.  This is a very expensive conference for teachers but we feel it is well worth it to be the best we can be for your kids. Thank you in advance for your help in achieving our team goal!
Please use the sign up genius below to sign your kids up and so we plan popcorn needed accordingly. We have set dates for the entire year. Make sure to sign up for the correct date.
**If we do not have at least 5 kiddos we will need to cancel that date night, so please tell your friends! 😊 We will let you know NO LATER than the Monday prior to the date night.

Weather Delays/School Cancellations

When Mother Nature decides to make travel to school dangerous we may find it necessary to cancel or delay school. We determine morning cancellations based on Zeeland Public Schools; If they are closed due to weather, we will be closed. If they delay due to weather, we will delay. will notify you by the following methods:

  • Email to parents

In the event of a 2 hour delay, school will begin at 11am. On these days, there will only be a HOT lunch choice for the day as Ms. Rosie won’t have time to prepare both choices.

Fair Trade Market Happening This Week – Join us for some Globally Conscious Shopping!

Screen Shot 2017-12-01 at 2.11.31 PM

Innocademy middle school robotics represented themselves very well in a tournament at Allendale Middle School.  Our top team finished the afternoon in 11th place out of nearly 40 teams.  Our other two teams also did very well ending up in 25th and 27th place.  This is a tremendous accomplishment, especially considering all of our students, coach, and teams had no experience at this level! The kids handled the stress of competition extremely well and positively praised their teammates and others throughout the tournament.  Our youngest team, and the youngest team in the nation (Las Huellas 5th grade) even wowed the judges in their presentation by expressing what they learned in both English and Spanish.  The teams learned a ton this year and are excited to use that experience to do even more next year.  We also picked up a local sponsor in Woodward, and two new mentors for next year’s team.  If you are interested in volunteering to help make our teams even better next season, please contact chad.zuber@innocademy.com

Angel Tree – Do You Know A Family In Need?

Do you have or know of an Innocademy Zeeland, Innocademy Allegan, Precademy or iCademy Family who has a need this holiday season, that we can help bless you with? We love taking care of our own little community, and helping with needs when they arise, which includes Christmas.

Again, this year we will offer an Angel Tree opportunity, open to all IES families; Precademy, Innocademy Allegan, Innocademy Zeeland and iCademy Global. Needs will be placed on a tree in the lobby, for others to select from, and help provide.

Please do not worry, as this will all be anonymous.

Should you have some specific needs this year – – or know of a family that does, please send an email request BY MONDAY, DECEMBER 4TH, to deedee.defrell@icademyglobal.org

All requests will be viewed by Ms Deedee. Once all requests have been received, you will hear back directly from her regarding your need(s) with specific details.

We wish for all families to enjoy their holidays, so please let us know how we can brighten yours.

Girls Running Club at Homestead Campus

Welcome to a new year and a new feel to our girls running club. At our IES schools we spend a lot of time working with our kids on 7 healthy habits. This year our running club will take this one step further and help our girls in grade 3rd-6th develop healthy habits in their relationships, personal self and the community around them. The plans are still being finalized but here is some good information to start thinking about

  1. We plan to begin meeting in early to mid-February for about 10-12 weeks. We look to meet twice a week after school for about 1.5 hours
  2. The cost we are hoping to keep at about $50.00 per student. This will include all materials (maybe even a fun book study), a 5K race in May (hosted by our sister school Innocademy Allegan) and a shirt.

As we travel down this new running path with volunteers of teachers and parents please know we are super excited to work with your girls and are working hard to get all the planning and details ironed out and will share them once we return from our Thanksgiving break. As always if you have any questions or suggestions feel free to share them with us at noemi.hoven@innocademy.com,  renee.frye@innocademy.com or ashely.dentler@innocademy.com. We are always open to volunteers and new ideas! Thank you!

Nominate Your Favorite Precademy/Inno/iG Teacher!

Pencil Nubbins for Mr. Chad =)

Please save for him all of your pencil or colored pencil stubs.  When you are down to the end of your pencil life either because the eraser is missing or the pencil is short or whatever.  Mr. Chad is creating several projects involving pegboards and has discovered that Pencils work in the larger pegboards!!! Also, golf tees of all colors would be greatly appreciated for a similar purpose.  Thanks!

SCRIP Update from Ms. Jody!

You have heard of Scrip over the last little bit.  You may know it is an ongoing fundraiser where you order gift cards to all your favorite stores to be used on future purchases.  You order it for $25, get a $25 card and also earn a small amount, 2-15%, towards your kiddos’ field trip accounts.  What you may not realize is how beneficial this opportunity is for you and your family.  We compared Scrip to our most popular fundraiser, our sub and pizza sale in the spring.  Here are the numbers:

Message from Michigan Department of Education

The opinion of parents and caregivers of school-aged children matters when it comes to reporting on how well schools serve Michigan’s children.

The Michigan Department of Education is inviting feedback from that group on Michigan’s new, online  “school transparency dashboard.” The dashboard is designed to show the performance of every public school in Michigan, including public school academies (charter schools).

The new dashboard is designed especially for parents and other caregivers. It will report on more than 20 different factors—or measures—that parents and other stakeholders have said are important to them when evaluating the quality of a school. The survey allows participants to view components of the new dashboard, then answer questions about the way information is presented, the usefulness of certain features, and unique interests.

  • Survey details:
    • You can complete the survey on any computer, tablet, or mobile device.
    • The survey should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.
    • All answers will be confidential.
    • Survey must be completed by November 15, 2017.

Thank you!

Student safety is of paramount importance to all of us at Innocademy. In order to keep students safe we want to remind our families that students should not arrive prior to 8:35am. They will not be admitted into the building should they arrive early and there are not any staff on duty outside prior to 8:35am. Thank you for your help and support in keeping our students safe.

Everyone, Please Read – Free/Reduced Lunch Applications.

Each year Innocademy receives additional funding based on our family population that may qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch. This additional funding works out to be a HUGE budget line item for us.

We are in danger of foregoing some funding this year simply because we have fewer families that have filled out the application. EEEK!!

We need your help! Even if you think you won’t qualify, or your kiddos might never even take hot lunch, PLEASE take a moment and fill out the CONFIDENTIAL online form.  Every little bit helps our schools!   Just go to lunchapp.com….search for our school through Holland Christian (they are our hot lunch provider).

You will be notified if you qualify and you can then decide if you would like to participate.

Thank you, in advance, for your help in securing extra funding for our students and programs.

News from Ms. Sharon and Art

I wanted to update everyone about what is happening in the art area We started out the year with name designs, each class doing something different.  We did abstract designs in electives, kaleidoscope designs for 3rd and fourth graders, fish designs for first and second graders and giant initials for kindergarteners.  Then we celebrated the solar eclipse with printed designs and suns.  After that we all learned about the human figure.  Younger students concentrated on the face and the older ones on proportions of the full figure.  We used a variety of materials including, colored pencils, pastels, crayons, markers, paint and collage to complete this project.  Since I spent some time in Japan this fall I was excited to do something Japanese so the first and second graders made polka dot pumpkins in the style of Yayoi Kusama, a Japanese artist.  We are now working on fall landscapes. Hope you can come inside our school and see all the artwork we have created, you will be amazed!

Outdoor Learning Center Update!

Over the course of the last couple of weeks a survey was performed on our land so we can move forward with getting the hardcourts set in place, hopefully before winter! Those stakes that have been placed are quite costly. Teachers will be reviewing with students the expectations about staying safe by keeping out of that space until it’s fully completed.

Pictures Should Have Come Home!

Digital files were sent to those folks who ordered them. Those who ordered prints should have received them in their student’s backpack last week. There are two galleries online for you to view if you would like to order yet. If you place your order through the gallery link, it will ship directly to you.

Click here and type in innowednesday as the password to view and order from Wednesday’s pictures.

Click here and type in innothursday as the password to view and order from Thursday’s pictures.

Where and When Do I Order A Yearbook?

There have been a few questions regarding yearbooks for Innocademy students. No worries – – you didn’t miss ordering one =). Because Christy is not a traditional school picture company, the yearbook ordering is not tied to our student picture orders. We do a separate hard cover yearbook each year and you will be able to place an order later this spring.

NEW Information For This Week

Outdoor Learning Center Update!

Over the course of the last couple of weeks a survey was performed on our land so we can move forward with getting the hardcourts set in place, hopefully before winter! Those stakes that have been placed are quite costly. Teachers will be reviewing with students the expectations about staying safe by keeping out of that space until it’s fully completed.

Pictures Coming Home!

Digital files will be sent to those folks who ordered them. Those who ordered prints will receive them in their student’s backpack today or Tuesday.

Picture Retake Day

For students who had their pictures taken at the beginning of October, pictures will be given to students on Monday or Tuesday of this week so please take a peek in backpacks! If your child needs a photo retaken or initially taken because they were absent or have joined our school family after that date, the retake day will be this THURSDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 26TH AT 11AM.

Fundraiser

# of participating families

Amount earned

Avg per family

Scrip (one year of earnings)

21

$4693.27

$223.49

Pizza & Sub Sale

53

$456.55

$84.09

As an example, if you are family with a Blue Room kiddo, their entire trip to Mackinac/LSSU this coming year could be paid for if you use Scrip to pay your everyday expenses like groceries, gas and clothing.  It’s easy to join and simple to use!

If you want to start taking advantage of this easy way to earn money for your kiddos accounts, please send Ms. Jody an email at jody.voss@innocademy.com for our school enrollment code or make plans to attend an info meeting on Thursday 10/26 @ 3:45pm in the Orange Room at Innocademy.

 Cleaning Out Closets?

As you are clearing out and getting ready for the holidays, please consider donating used building toys to Innocademy Maker Space.  Students are excitedly designing solutions to engineering challenges using K’nex, Lego, Lincoln Logs, Dominos, Jenga pieces, snap circuits, and so much more!

Also Innocademy can use up remaining portions of gift certificates to Lowes, Menards, Meijer and other local retailers.  Lots of small parts and pieces could be bought with leftover cards!

Old Info (In Case You Haven’t Seen it, Yet)

Reminder – Hand 2 Hand Still Available

Homestead Campus is again participating with a program called “Hand2Hand”. This program provides supplemental weekend food and snacks for families. Should you decide to participate, your child will receive a bag full of food items, on Thursdays, that may be eaten over the weekend by your family. There is no cost to participate. Keep in mind this program is intended to come alongside families who could really use the help. If you are not in need of this type of assistance right now please refrain from signing up so we can maximize our resources for those families who would benefit from this.

Individual families can decide how long or short a period of time they would like to participate. If you sign up for Hand2Hand, then down the road you no longer need the assistance, simply write a note expressing your desire to discontinue receiving Hand2Hand food bags. You may bring the note right to the front desk or give to the child’s teacher. This opportunity is being provided through the H2H Hope Gathering Area Pantry, Vertical Church, Community Ref Church and Faith Ref Church.

To participate, you can fill out the form here and return to the front desk:

Our team would put the money we collect from these parent night out events into our Professional Development Account that will help us go to Minnesota and learn from Spanish Immersion experts at the University of Minnesota next school year.  This is a very expensive conference for teachers but we feel it is well worth it to be the best we can be for your kids. Thank you in advance for your help in achieving our team goal!
Please use the sign up genius below to sign your kids up and so we plan popcorn needed accordingly. We have set dates for the entire year. Make sure to sign up for the correct date.

Daycare Staff – Help Wanted!

We are looking for someone to join our Daycare Team.  This position would work 8:30 – 4:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays (there may be opportunity to sub on other days on an as-needed basis).  Generally speaking, the staff daycare is ope on days school is in session as well as staff Professional Development days.

The Daycare team provides care to our staff’s children.  The kids range from 12 weeks old to 5 years old.  Providing a nurturing environment for these little ones while mom/dad is working is the key to this role.  Responsibilities include caring for kids, feeding them, bringing them outside for playtime, etc.

Please email Sara in Human Resources if you are interested in more information on this position – her email is sara.vereeke@innocademy.com

Multiplication Mania, Growth Groups, BrainIAC time, MTSS – What is it?

You may have heard your child mention a particular part of their day when they work with a teacher and a small group of students? In Allegan it is called “BrainIAC” time. At Innocademy Zeeland it is called “Multiplication Mania” in middle school and “Growth Groups” for elementary students.

No matter the name it is a Multi-Tiered System of Support or MTSS for short. This is just one more tactic of our “just right learning” philosophy. Essentially, it is a learning journey where we try to meet each student where they are academically; whether they need to be challenged in a particular area or could use additional academic support.

Based on assessment data, we have created small groups for students where they focus on reviewing or reinforcing specific learning targets several times a week. In this current session the learning targets are in math.

As we progress through the year, students will be grouped and regrouped; each student receiving what he/she needs for a particular set of learning targets and expectations.

Hopefully, you will be hearing a lot from your kiddos about their learning groups this year!

Microwaves At Lunch…Food For Thought =)

It is true that we have two microwaves at lunch for students to use. It’s a GREAT option once in a while to heat up a quick lunch. Please keep in mind, though, that we have over 100 students eating lunch at one time. If 60 students bring something to heat up for one minute each, the line for microwave use could easily be 1/2 hour…longer than the lunch time =(. Please be conscious of sending items that take more than 30seconds – 1 minute to heat up. Some families have purchased a small lunch size thermos and heat up items in the morning. Amazing how warm that keeps food until lunchtime. Thanks for your help!
